M5 The Trial – Reporting For Duty
by Commodore Talla H'Rhar
Termin Elek stepped off the transporter pad with a sense of relief. It wasn't that he was afraid of transporters - far from it, he was too long in the tooth for that sort of thing - but he had grown very fond of his molecules being arranged in their current formation, and was reluctant to see them in any other form - half-way across the galaxy, for example.
Stepping down from the pad, he nodded his thanks to the NCO operator.
"Thanks, Chief," he said. "Where can I find the captain?"
The chief checked her console, then looked back up at Elek.
"In her ready room, Ensign."
Elek smiled at her, thanked her again, and headed straight for the nearest turbolft. As he did so, he felt himself relax - he was back on a starship! It was his first Starfleet ship posting - he'd spent the past six months since graduating on Vulcan as an associate JAG officer - but had served in the El-Aurian space service, back when he was a younger man. He had always loved the feeling of deck-plating beneath his feet, and all the old memories were flooding back to him.
"Bridge," he said as he entered the turbolift.
He cursed as he shifted his duffle bag over his left shoulder - *I should have taken this to my quarters first.* He frowned. *Of course, that means finding my quarters first ... right, I'm tracking down the QM after I'm done with the captain.*
The turbolift quickly delivered him to the bridge, and he stepped out onto a quiet, calm deck - the mark of an efficient command centre, in Elek's book. Nodding to a couple of crewmen, who nodded back with curiosity, he walked over to the door of the captain's ready room and dressed the door chime.
The Andorian captain had been on duty for two hours now, but only just had she had time for her breakfast. She knew Aaron had an appointment with the prosecutor in an hour, so she had excused him from being on duty. "Come!" she called out, while washing away a bite of sandwich with a sip of tea.
Her antennae twitched in surprise as what appeared to be a young man with purple colours on him walked in. ~A diplomat?~ she wondered ~when did I request a diplomat?~ Not that it would be unwelcome, as diplomatic officers were very handy to have on board, as they had experience in a wide variety of aspects. She sat back, waiting for the newcomer to introduce himself.
"Good morning, Captain," Elek said placidly. "I am Ensign Termin Elek. Command have assigned me as your Chief Diplomatic Officer. I just arrived onboard and wanted to report in before commencing my duties. Is this a bad time, sir?"
"Ma'am," Talla corrected on auto-pilot, "and no it's not a bad time. Please, take a seat. How was your journey? Uneventful, I hope?"
Elek nodded as he sat down. "Thankfully yes, ma'am. I was stationed on Vulcan at the JAG office there - an old friend of mine offered me a ride on his transport vessel. We go back a century or so, so it was good to spend a few days together before I joined the Sarek."
"Spending time with friends is always good. How familiar are you with the Jouretians?" She gestured to the window. "Later today we'll be starting the trial of one of our crewmembers, as well as sending down survey parties. In two hours, I and some of my senior staff are due to meet with the tribunal members. I'd like for you to be there."
Elek nodded. "Of course. I'm not overly familiar with the Jouretians, though - they didn't come up on my initial reading list, and the trip wasn't long enough to fully assimilate everything." He frowned, more at himself than anything - he hated being unprepared for any meeting, but also wouldn't allow that to get in the way of learning something knew. "Anything you might be able to tell me would be most appreciated."
"If you're quick, you might catch Commander Guilder in his quarters before his meeting with the prosecutor. He knows more about them than I do. Otherwise I refer you to our Intelligence Chief, Commander Kentar. I fear I am hardly a diplomat, my first concern is my crew, and my ship."
"The first priority of any good captain, ma'am," Elek said with a smile. "And that's where I'm happy to help. Do you have any specific instructions for my department? I'd like to know that I'm working in line with your expectations."
"Commander Guilder will provide you with instructions," Talla replied calmly, "and he'll see to your quarter assignment as well."
Elek nodded, detecting the subtle note of a busy captain needing to get back to her work.
"Thank you for your time, Captain," he said, rising. "May I be excuse to attend to my duties?"
"Dismissed."
