M5 The Trial – Strange Awareness
by Commodore Talla H'Rhar & Lieutenant JG Gired
Wintrow woke early as usual, he barely ever got to sleep in but now was nearly impossible as when he rolled over and tried to stretch out, his arm struck a fairly massive object lying right next to him. Bewildered, he sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, trying to recall the previous evening. The memory was rather vague but as he leaned over the form, he noticed Javron's sleeping form. "Jav?" he queried, nudging his new brother gently. "Jav wake up. I'm hungry..."
Javron grunted in his sleep but didn't move. It was next to impossible to wake the teenager up some days; his father could attest to that.
Wintrow nudged a little harder, yanking the blanket away. If he were in the condition to do so, he would've jumped up and down the bed like a little child. As it were, he had sufficient strength to comfortably nudge his brother. "Jav, if you don't wake up now I'm going to put Mason's gerbils on you..."
Javron still didn't move. He was rarely so easy to get up and this was not one of those times.
Rolling his eyes, Wintrow rose from the bed and went into the bathroom. He filled up a glass with water from the small tap, then upended the glass on Javron's face, thereby wetting the bedding as well. "Get up sleepyhead. You've school to attend, and I doubt Gired'd want you to miss out." He stiffled a yawn. "You kept me up half the night you know..."
Javron spluttered in the new wetness on his face. "Alright, I'm up!" he snarled. After taking a quick sonic shower and getting dressed he bolted down a large breakfast and left for school. "See ya, bro!" he said and headed out the door.
Such was his morning ritual: impossible to get up, quick shower and breakfast, then out the door just in time to make it to class. Win would learn that very quickly.
Wintrow stalked after him. "Hey! Get back here!" he shouted into the corridor, still wrapping his mind around the fact that he got up and out so fast, well before he could down a single sandwich.
Javron came back, but looked impatient. "What? I'm gonna be late!"
Unabashed, Wintrow wrapped his arms around the younger boy, pulling him into a hug. "No you're not. You've got a few minutes to spare, thanks to me. Did you sleep all right?"
Javron grumbled. "You mean I could have had a few more minutes' sleep? Aww, man..." He then remembered that Win needed support right now, not complaining. "I slept okay until someone dumped water on me."
This time, Wintrow grinned. "Yes well you deserved it, for keeping me up half the night. Bloody hell never had someone toss so much on me. You did take most of the bed you know, I was squeezed right on the edge most of the night, trying not to fall out." He released his hug-hold on the younger boy. "And how do you feel? Perhaps before noon we can go visit Gired? I'd like to see him. Or perhaps I can while you're in school. I can't do much now anyway..."
Javron looked uncomfortable. "I don't want to bother him. Besides, I'll be in school until 1500. Maybe I can see him once I get out of school."
Wintrow's face fell in disappointment. "Do you mind if I go see him? If I stay here the walls will come down on me, I need to get out for a bit or I'll go mad. And I think Gired might appreciate the company. He does this for us you know, I'm sure he does what he thinks is best. I don't know him well enough to judge, but I honestly believe that he thinks he's dangerous to us, and that you staying with me is safer for the both of us. But I want to see him Jav, I need to. For myself. For once, I need to do something for myself, and see the decision I made through. I've never done that before and I'm scared out of my wits."
"Okay. Just be home in time for dinner. I gotta warn you though, Dad isn't right in the head right now. Something's going on with him." Javron hesitated. "I don't know what he thinks will happen but he's scared of something."
"I know. Empath, remember?" Wintrow replied gently. "And you're just as scared. Your feelings are strong brother, I can sense them with ease." He gave the younger man a final hug. "You go to school, I'll go see Gired. And I'll be home, don't worry. Not allowed to do much of anything remember? But if somehow I can help Gired, you know just by being there, then it'll make me feel better."
Javron nodded, then headed in the direction of the ship's school. He didn't want to think about what would happen to him if his dad went nuts. First his mom, now his dad. How much more loss could he take?
